Centre for Research and Innovation

The Centre for Research & Innovation (CERI) has been set up under the Directorate of Urban Land Transport to realize the objectives of the Research & Innovation Policy approved vide O.M No. DULT-RSIN/1/2021 dated: 02.08.2021. Setting up of the Centre for Research & Innovation and allocation of funding for the centre was approved vide Proceedings of the 9th Empowered Committee meeting of State UrbanTransport Fund on 06.08.2021. CERI administers the Research and Innovation Policy to provide the necessary impetus to support research initiatives and accelerate innovation in sustainable urban mobility.

The objectives of the Research & Innovation policy are:

  1. To promote and engage in research on urban mobility systems with focus on ecological sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity.
  2. To leverage the existing innovation system in urban mobility to support and promote disruptive ideas and solutions, relating to mobility of people and goods.

CERI is responsible for implementing the various actions listed in the operational guideline of the Research & Innovation Policy.

The operational budget to cover staffing costs and to set up infrastructure to support the research and innovation initiatives has been estimated for 5 years.

The Centre for Research and Innovation (CERI) will prepare an annual implementation plan detailing planned initiatives to achieve the policy objectives. Following review and approval of the annual plan, implementation budget will be sought from the State Urban Transport Fund (SUTF).

In the last quarter of the financial year, the Centre for Research and Innovation (CERI) will prepare an Annual Performance Report that will provide details of all research and innovation activities during the year.

CART

Annual “call for research topics” (CART) soliciting research ideas and suggestions from stakeholders in Government.

ASPIRE

An Annual research programme will be drawn up with adequate funds for encouraging identification of priority research areas in the field of urban mobility considering both technology- and policy-oriented research.

CALIPER

A tool-Capture of Learnings and Insights from Project Execution and Review (CALIPER) will be developed and administered every quarter from organisational verticals to create a knowledge repository.

MODELLING RESEARCH LAB

A modelling research lab will be created with all necessary tools, softwares etc.

ASPIRE - DULT's Annual Research Program

The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) has brought out a Research and Innovation Policy in order to build a strong ecosystem of research and innovation in urban mobility and established a Centre for Research and Innovation (CERI) within the organization.

One of the important programs of the CERI - “Call for Research Topics (CART)” solicited research ideas and suggestions from various stakeholders on problem statements and research topics related to urban mobility and finalized a list of tentative research topics to be taken up for DULT’s annual research programme named ‘ASPIRE’. Some funding will also be provided on a selective basis by DULT for such research.

Open Call to invite Research Proposals under ASPIRE-01/2022

The Centre for Research and Innovation, DULT is thereby inviting research proposals under the ASPIRE program (ASPIRE-01/2022) from Individual Researchers, Academic and Research Institutions for six research topics identified under the CART Program.

The urban mobility topics identified along with the associated research briefs are mentioned below

Behavioral experiments on uptake of cycling Download
Study of complementarity between public transport systems in Bengaluru Download
Employer-based sustainable commute programs Download
Transportation planning metric with focus on mobility of people Download

CART – DULT’s Call for Research Topics

One of the important programs of the CERI - “Call for Research Topics (CART)”- has been designed to solicit research ideas and suggestions from various stakeholders on topics including, but not limited to Active mobility, Public Transport, Micro-mobility, Urban Freight and Travel demand management, and invite research proposals from academic and R&D institutions in the State. The first edition of CART was called in October 2021 and received an overwhelming response from all government stakeholders. A total of 101 problem areas were collated from various government and private stakeholders in the field of mobility.

The research topics which were collated through CART were further shortlisted and translated into 6 research projects under the 1st edition of our annual research program ASPIRE-01/2022 which is currently ongoing with various reputed academic institutions across the country including IISc, IIT-Delhi, MAHE-Manipal, etc.

DULT’s Centre for Research & Innovation (CERI) is hence soliciting views on issues and challenges faced by various government departments in urban mobility, related to research related to technology and data that can improve urban mobility planning/operations/implementation etc. If interested to contribute, fill the format (CART form) that is provided below and send it to cart.dult@gmail.com latest by 25th January 2023.
