Centre for Urban Design

The Centre for Urban Design has been set up under the Karnataka Non-motorised Transport Agency with the aim to develop proposals that improves the experienced quality of public space, particularly mobility related infrastructure as the quality of one’s environment is instrumental in determining whether a person chooses to walk, cycle, or take public transport. Good design not only offers quality but also elevates the functionality of any investment made towards infrastructure. 

To ensure that quality public space and infrastructure is delivered, the Centre for Urban Design adopts a design practice that is inclusive, participative, environmentally sustainable, and accessible. 

The activities of the centre are structured to achieve the following objectives.

  1. To use design as an instrument to create safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable urban mobility infrastructure.
  2. To engage with students, young professionals, city architects, urban planners, and designers etc. to educate, collaborate, innovate, and implement urban design principles and strategies.
  3. To create a platform to improve understanding of the urban areas and contextual issues and challenges through lectures and workshops.
  4. To implement and demonstrate urban design principles on ground and consolidate insights and learnings derived from such implementation.
  5. To conduct and publish research on topical and relevant issues.
